Had a great few days shooting in the Torres Strait this week. The highlight was Poruma Island. Beautiful place with fabulous food served in our bungalow every night. We even managed a fishing trip out on the reef. Leisa caught a few parrot fish and I struggled to spear a Painted Cray. Local fisherman Jackson came to my rescue and ended up catching two crays. Its hard work hanging upside down in the water trying to spot the crays that spend their days in the darkness under the rocks.
Being a photographer might sound like a glamorous profession but its not always like that. I nearly puked taking this image of Cane Toads. The smell was absolutely revolting and stayed on my clothes for the rest of the day. Its was part of a mass round up and extermination of Cane Toads in Townsville. The organizers estimated that 25,000 Toads were collected. I think thats a bit of an overstatement. My estimation was more like 10,000. Whatever the number it was disgusting. Thanks a lot Leisa for giving me the gig - she's making up for it in a few weeks when we fly to Horn Island and other Islands in the north for a Tourism shoot.
Well another cyclone and hopefully the last for the season. This is a big one that's expected to turn into a cat 4 system sometime today. It seems that we will be OK in Townsville as it's a fair way out to sea and following a fairly straight southeasterly track. But with cyclones you never know and at any stage it can turn west and head to the coast. At any rate there is a good chance that somewhere in the next 24/48 hours is going to get smashed by this one. +1 is at the shops stocking up on supplies and yesterday I secured what I could in my studio and wrapped all hard drives in bags etc. Watch this space...
